What is NBC 2016?

The National Building Code of India (NBC) 2016 is published by the Bureau of Indian Standards (BIS). It is a comprehensive building code that provides guidelines for regulating building construction activities across India. Part 4 of NBC 2016 covers Fire and Life Safety, including requirements for fire-rated doors, compartmentation, and means of egress.

Where are Fire-Rated Doors Mandatory under NBC 2016?

High-Rise Buildings

For buildings above 15 metres in height, NBC 2016 requires:

  • Fire-rated doors at all staircase enclosures (minimum 60-minute rating)
  • Fire-rated doors at lift lobby enclosures on each floor
  • Fire-rated doors at service shaft openings
  • Compartmentation walls separating different fire zones must have fire-rated door openings

Assembly Buildings (Schools, Colleges, Cinemas)

  • Exit doors and staircase enclosures: minimum 60-minute fire rating
  • Stage/backstage separation in cinemas and theatres: 120-minute fire rating

Institutional Buildings (Hospitals, Clinics)

  • Operating theatres and ICU corridors: fire-rated and hermetically sealed doors
  • Staircase and service shaft enclosures: minimum 60-minute rating
  • Pharmacy and store areas: 60-minute fire-rated doors

Industrial Buildings

  • Hazardous material storage areas: 120-minute fire rating
  • Boiler rooms and generator rooms: minimum 60-minute fire rating
  • Paint shops and solvent storage: 120-minute fire rating

Basements

  • Basement to ground floor connections: 120-minute fire-rated door
  • Basement car parks: 60-minute fire-rated doors at all openings
