What is a Fire-Rated Door? Complete Guide to IS:3614 and BS:476 Standards
A fire-rated door is more than just a heavy steel door. It is a life-safety assembly, tested and certified to contain fire and smoke for a specified period. In India, this is governed by IS:3614 Part II and internationally by BS:476 Part 22.
What Does "Fire-Rated" Actually Mean?
A fire-rated door is tested to withstand fire for a defined duration, typically 30, 60, or 120 minutes. During testing, the door must prevent the passage of flames, hot gases, and smoke from one side to the other. The door set (including frame, hardware, seals, and hinges) is tested as a complete assembly.
At Acodor, our fire-rated doors are available in 60-minute and 120-minute ratings, manufactured at our 65,000 sq ft plant in Ahmedabad, Gujarat.
IS:3614 Part II: The Indian Standard
The Bureau of Indian Standards (BIS) IS:3614 Part II covers fire-resisting doorsets in India. Key requirements include:
- Door assembly must be tested as a complete unit (door leaf, frame, hardware)
- Test exposure according to standard temperature-time curve
- Fire resistance measured in minutes (FD30, FD60, FD120)
- Certified by CBRI (Central Building Research Institute) Roorkee for India
BS:476 Part 22: The British Standard
BS:476 Part 22 is the UK fire test standard for non-load-bearing elements. Acodor doors are dual-certified to both IS:3614 and BS:476, making them acceptable for projects with international specifications including UAE, GCC countries, and UK-aligned building codes.
Fire-Rated Door Components
Steel skin over mineral core (ceramic wool or rock wool) provides fire resistance. Thickness: 46mm or 56mm.
Pressed steel frame anchored into the structural wall. Frame integrity is critical to the assembly's fire rating.
Heat-activated seals that expand to seal the gap between door and frame, blocking fire and smoke passage.
Hinges, latches, closers, and locks must all be tested and approved for the fire rating of the assembly.
Where Are Fire-Rated Doors Mandatory in India?
The National Building Code of India 2016 (NBC 2016) mandates fire-rated doors in:
- High-rise buildings (above 15 metres) at staircase and lift lobby enclosures
- Hospitals, hotels, and educational institutions
- Industrial buildings storing hazardous materials
- Basements used for vehicle parking or storage
- Compartmentation walls and fire barriers
